Microbiome-Friendly Formulas

While biome-based skincare isn’t a new concept, it sure took it’s time to come to the surface (no pun intended). The concept is based on working with the skin’s natural ecosystem, rather than against it. Something the modern skincare marketing paradigm rarely encourages.

Raise your hand if you have peeled away your skin barrier, felt the retinol burn or have over-exfoliated in search of flawless skin.

Did you know that most skin issues stem from a damaged skin barrier or imbalance in the microorganisms of the skin microbiome? Instead of using harsh chemicals or over-exfoliating to improve the appearance of the skin, microbiome-friendly skincare gently balances the skin’s biological environment with good bacteria and nutrients that help soothe and restore the skin back to its healthy, natural state of homeostasis.

Our skin is a big deal - literally. It is the largest organ in the human body so it’s important to be gentle and keep it healthy. Our formulas are mindfully crafted for each layer of the skin: the acid mantle, skin barrier and microbiome.

What are the differences between each skin layer?

1: The Acid Mantle

The acid mantle is a thin layer on the skin’s surface that helps to act as a barrier against bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants.

How does Miami Beach Bum help?

We formulate at a pH 5-5.5 to keep the acidic balance of your acid mantle, and to maintain a healthy skin barrier that protects from environmental damage. Think, lock moisture in and the environmental stressors– out!

 2: The Skin (Moisture) Barrier

The skin barrier is the outermost layer of skin that supports long-lasting hydration, keeping our external aggressors, irritants, and seals in moisture.

How does Miami Beach Bum help?

We formulate with a base of aloe and ingredients like shea butter, jojoba oil, squalane, and hyaluronic acid to restore your skin barrier, infuse hydration, and soothe irritations.

 3: Microbiome

The skin’s microbiome is the billions of microorganisms (bacteria, yeast, and fungus) that guard against pathogens that could affect your skin health. Microorganisms colonize your skin and perform natural functions like hydration and exfoliation.  Your skin is like any other ecosystem, if something is overgrowing, something else is out of balance– and this is where skin issues stem from.

How does Miami Beach Bum help?

We use herbal extracts with antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anti-fungal properties to balance the microorganisms in the microbiome. These ingredients help balance any overgrowth of bacteria, yeast or fungus. Keeping all these microorganisms in homeostasis is the key to achieving your healthiest skin.

Is your skincare ritual microbiome-friendly?

Conventional cosmetics are declining our skin health with preservatives, fragrances and long ingredient lists that we don’t actually need. More minimal ingredient lists that are mindfully made with plant derivatives and herbs = a better likelihood that the product is microbiome-friendly.

Beyond using  microbiome-friendly skincare to improve skin health and achieve homeostasis, it is also important to get out in nature. Take a walk outside, play in your garden, hike in the mountains, relax on the beach, and interact with all those good bacterias.

This is where healthy skin and a healthy lifestyle begins.
